Can you create memories where none exist?
Old photographs of family members are considered precious objects, valued by their owner and often displayed proudly in their home. But what about the family members you know little about? The ones who seemingly “disappear” from your family tree - whether they’re records and photographs were simply lost over time, or they distanced themselves from the rest of the family. Can you still use photography as a way of connecting with them?
Using images of their family members and other descriptive materials, I created portraits of the “missing” family members of three different people. Each photograph has a story behind it, and I attempt to mimic the time period in which each subject was alive.
